Trim Tab goes down, but not up...

Hey guys!

My starboard trim tab goes down, but it won't come back up. When I hit the up button, I do hear a clicking but the pump doesn't activate and I have no movement. Down is no problem.

What's the most likely cause for this? Bad solenoid? Relay? Motor? Wiring? Switch? Where do I begin? Any quick tips so I don't spend too much time troubleshooting?

Solenoid, almost certainly. Also make sure the connector didn't just come loose, mine have tie wraps on them and still want to back out occasionally.

Thanks guys. That was my first instinct as well. Okay, so can I assume that there are two solenoids since I still have down function - or is it a combined unit?

Anyone have a P/N for this solenoid?

Cross the big posts on the solenoid. If it runs the solenoid is bad. If it doesn't tap the cap on the trim motor. Brushes may be sticking.

The solenoid could be fine if it lost its power source it would click but, do nothing. Wiggle all leads. If any are green with corrosion loosen wiggle and tighten.

If you have a volt meter you can check for voltage on big poles. Red should be hot and color side hot when switch is activated. Check all grounds on pump too. All components could be fine but a loose ground with keep it from working.

Chads number is correct in most cases. An older style pump will have a different part number.

If it is the solenoid change them both. The work is the same.

start by swapping the solenoid trigger wires. This will tell you if it's in the solenoids or the control system. If the problem moves to the other direction, start looking at the switch. A test light and a helper is another way.

Good idea, Chris...heck it could be just the stupid switch or the wires. I do hear a click, though, so I'm thinking that the circuit is being completed, just not getting passed the solenoid. I'm checking it tonight and will let you guys know.

If it's clicking it's likely the solenoid. Order an extra one when you get them- they're like impellers- they go out and can ruin a weekend- especially if it's on a drive pump.

Yep, it's a bad solenoid. I bridged the gap with with a screwdriver, and sure enough it all worked like a charm. Problem solved. New solenoid on the way! Thanks to Scott!

Little tip.... Blue Sky (up) Green Grass (down) when checking the solenoids and wires so you know which is up or down!
